What Is CBG? The 'Mother of All Cannabinoids'

CBG is the precursor to THC, CBD, and CBC — discover why it's making waves.

CBG, or cannabigerol, is often called the "mother of all cannabinoids" because it's the chemical precursor from which all other cannabinoids are synthesized. In the early stages of cannabis plant growth, CBGA (the acidic form of CBG) is the first cannabinoid produced, which then converts into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA as the plant matures.

How does CBG work?

CBG interacts with both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system, giving it a broad range of potential effects. It's non-intoxicating, meaning it won't get you high, but it may influence mood, pain, and inflammation through multiple pathways.

Potential benefits of CBG:

  • Appetite Stimulation — Unlike THCV, CBG may help stimulate appetite without the psychoactive effects of THC. This could be valuable for patients dealing with appetite loss.
  • Gut Health — CBG has shown promise in reducing inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in preclinical studies.
  • Eye Health — Research suggests CBG may help reduce intraocular pressure, making it a potential option for glaucoma support.
  • Antibacterial — CBG has demonstrated powerful antibacterial properties, including effectiveness against MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
  • Neuroprotection — Early studies indicate CBG may protect nerve cells, with potential applications for conditions like Huntington's disease.
  • Bladder Health — CBG appears to reduce bladder contractions, which could help with overactive bladder conditions.

Why is CBG rare?

Most cannabis strains contain less than 1% CBG by the time they're harvested, because most of it has already converted into other cannabinoids. However, breeders are now developing high-CBG strains, and extraction technology has made CBG-rich products more accessible.
