What Is CBC? The Overlooked Cannabinoid With Big Potential

CBC may not be as famous as THC or CBD, but research suggests it has unique benefits.

CBC, or cannabichromene, is one of the six major cannabinoids found in cannabis, yet it remains relatively unknown compared to THC and CBD. First discovered in 1966, CBC is non-intoxicating and shows exciting potential in several areas of wellness.

How does CBC work?

Unlike THC, CBC doesn't bind well to CB1 receptors in the brain, which is why it doesn't produce a high. Instead, CBC interacts with other receptors in the body, including TRPV1 and TRPA1 receptors, which are involved in pain perception. It also helps increase the body's natural endocannabinoids by inhibiting their breakdown.

Potential benefits of CBC:

  • Mood Support — CBC may work alongside CBD and THC to produce antidepressant-like effects, contributing to the entourage effect.
  • Pain & Inflammation — CBC has shown anti-inflammatory properties in research, potentially blocking pain and inflammation at the source.
  • Brain Health — One of CBC's most promising areas is neurogenesis — it may promote the growth of new brain cells, which is rare among cannabinoids.
  • Acne & Skin Health — CBC has demonstrated the ability to reduce excessive sebum production and inflammation in sebaceous glands, suggesting potential as an acne treatment.
  • Gut Health — Early research indicates CBC may help regulate intestinal motility and inflammation.

The entourage effect.

CBC is a great example of why whole-plant cannabis products can be more effective than isolated compounds. When CBC works alongside THC, CBD, and terpenes, the combined effect may be greater than any single cannabinoid alone.

Finding CBC products.

Because CBC is present in smaller quantities, it's most commonly found in full-spectrum or broad-spectrum products. Ask our team at Mission Cannabis Club about products with rich cannabinoid profiles that include CBC.
