If you've ever noticed that different cannabis strains smell completely different — piney, citrusy, earthy, or fruity — you're experiencing terpenes in action.
What are terpenes?
Terpenes are organic compounds produced by many plants, including cannabis. They're responsible for the distinct aromas and flavors of each strain. But they do more than just smell good — terpenes also interact with cannabinoids like THC and CBD to influence the overall effects of cannabis.
Common terpenes to know:
- Myrcene — Earthy, musky aroma. Associated with relaxation and sedation. Found in many indica-leaning strains.
- Limonene — Bright citrus scent. Linked to mood elevation and stress relief.
- Pinene — Fresh pine aroma. May promote alertness and memory retention.
- Linalool — Floral, lavender-like. Known for calming and anti-anxiety properties.
- Caryophyllene — Spicy, peppery notes. The only terpene that interacts with the endocannabinoid system directly.
The entourage effect.
Research suggests that terpenes work synergistically with cannabinoids — a concept known as the "entourage effect." This means a strain's full profile of compounds may produce better results than any single ingredient alone.
At Mission Cannabis Club, we carry products with detailed terpene information so you can make informed choices about your cannabis experience.
